9 summer outdoor movie series in Dallas


 

 

Gather your picnic blankets, lawn chairs, bug spray and smuggled wine — it’s outdoor movie series time! It’s officially summer and to me an outdoor film is perfect way to spend an evening, whether for a romantic date, a fun girl’s evening or a family affair. Thankfully if you live in the Dallas area, you’ll have plenty of options. Here are 6 places to film-fest alfresco this summer:

1) Moonlight movie series at Main Street Garden – Downtown Dallas Inc. presents an outdoor movie series on Saturdays starting at 8:30 pm. Free admission. Website.

  • June 11 – Inception
  • June 18 – The Dark Knight
  • June 25 – Manhattan

 

2) ’80′s Flicks at Central 214 at the Hotel Palomar — Every Sunday night, starting at 9 pm, Central 214 will transform their patio into a movie theater featuring classic ’80s flicks. Free admission. Late-night food and drink menu available. Website.

  • June 5 – Valley Girl
  • June 12 – Sixteen Candles
  • June 19 – Pretty in Pink

 

3) Parking lot theater at Half Price Books, Northwest Highway — Spend your Saturday’s at Half Price Books’ parking lot-turned movie theater. Films start at 8:45 pm. Free admission. Website.

 

4) ‘Til Midnight at the Nasher Sculpture Center — On the third Friday of the month through October, you can enjoy both an outdoor concert and movie at the ‘Til Midnight at the Nasher event. Concerts start at 7 pm, movies at 9 pm. Admission is free for members, $10 for adults, $8 for seniors, $5 for students. Children 12 and under are free. You can also pre-order picnics. Website.

5) Dive-In at The Fairmont Dallas — Beat the heat by watching an outdoor film while lounging by (or in) The Fairmont Dallas’ junior Olympic size pool located atop their Terrace level. Movies start at 8:30 pm on Friday nights. Each month has a theme: Musicals for June, Beach Movies for July and Back to School for August. Website

  • September 2 – The Breakfast Club

 

6) Family night at the Village at Fairview — Family Movie Night started in May on the first Saturday of the month at the Grand Commons Stage at the Village Foundation. Movies start at dusk. Website.

  • July 2 – Megamind
  • August 6 – Tangled
  • September 3 – Gnomeo and Juliet

 

7) Movies under the Moon at The Shops at Park Lane — Spend Friday evenings in June at The Shops at Park Lane enjoying free, family-friendly movies. Movies start at 8 pm. Website.

  • June 3 – The Wizard of Oz
  • June 10 – Despicable Me
  • June 17 – E.T.
  • June 24 – Shrek

 

8) Sunset Screenings, presented by the AT&T Performing Arts Center and the Dallas Film Society, offers free outdoor shows at Annette Strauss Square on the third Saturday of the month until November. Movies start at sunset. Concessions stands will have refreshments available for purchase. No outside food or drinks are allowed in Annette Strauss Square. Website.

  • September 17 – Waiting for Guffman

9) The Belmont Hotel is bringing back their Dive-In Movie series one Thursday a month.  Door opens at 7pm, movies begin at dusk. Website.

  • August 11 – Almost Famous

    Don’t forget the Belmont in Oak Cliff, The Harbor in Rockwall and downtown Rowlett — they have outdoor movies too!

      They have in previous years, but I haven’t heard anything about it for 2011. I know they both have outdoor concert series though!
