// Sputnik Light by Modern Eve

Even before the popularity of Mad Men, I’ve had a place in my heart for Mid-Century Modern. Bertoia chairs, Eames loungers, Saarinen tulip tables – put them center-stage in a photo and I’m bound to re-pin it. Mid-century modern-inspired furniture (click here to see a cool illustrated poster) is some of my favorite on the market, but it’s lighting from this period that really catches my attention. Specifically today I’m talking about Sputnik light fixtures.

This starburst shape makes a huge statement in any room. Here it’s seen in entryways, living rooms, dining rooms and even bedrooms. Can I be honest? I am planning on putting one in my laundry room here soon. The light takes it’s name from the first man-made satellite to orbit the Earth, Sputnik, which helped spawn the Space Age, and in turn influenced a whole series of modern furniture, gadgets and other design motifs.

Today, the Sputnik light is more popular than ever. Interested in your own Sputnik light? There are some great options at Lamps Plus, Lumens, YLighting and Hayneedle. And definitely check back to see if I pull the trigger on installing one in my laundry room.
