Temperatures are finally turning a corner here in Dallas, which means it’s time to break out the layers. Secretly I wish I lived in northern California and could layer-up year-round. But, in Texas, we have a short window for this type of weather; and I love to take advantage.
There really is an art to layering, but it’s easy to master. Here are some of my quick tips for that bundled, but not bulky, chic look:
First, start with a layer that lives close to your body. This can be a basic blouse, a comfy tee or even a a slim-fitting dress, as seen here. Next, for your second layer, add a complementary button-down or thin cardigan sweater. This layer can be open or closed, just make sure it easily fits over your first layer and isn’t bunching in awkward places. Tip: a great place to check for unwanted bulk is your arms. Finally, throw on your outer layer – a chunkier sweater, a poncho or leather jacket all make great choices. Leave this un-buttoned or un-zipped to frame-out the whole look!
When layering a baby bump, there are some added challenges. Here I used two thin, silky layers as my base. You definitely don’t want to add any extra weight when you’re pregnant. I also included a thin belt to help define my bump. This technique works great with dresses; and helps confirm your pregnancy for those that may not be sure.

I chose a bold, jeweled-tone color palette for this look. I decided to stick with emerald for the top layers, both found at T.J.Maxx. The different textures are fun, and straying from the same color-family might have been a little loud.
I love the details on this designer dress, found at T.J.Maxx. It’s not maternity, but fits perfectly over my baby bump. Plus, I found it on clearance. Don’t forget to check out those racks – talk about serious quality and style for a great price!
I keep my jewelry and beauty simple for this look. The bold colors and varying texture were enough. But I did include a berry lip and plum nails. T.J.Maxx has some great beauty finds, so next time you’re there, make sure to check out those aisles.
I love this baby bump shot! I’m 27 and half weeks here.
