I’ve always loved to celebrate. Small occasions and large momentous ones – it doesn’t matter. Any excuse to gather loved ones and eat cake is alright with me. So, honestly, I’m thrilled to have a built-in reason to play annual party planner now that I have a daughter. Beckett’s first birthday party was so much fun for me to imagine and execute, right down to the final DIY touches. And despite my fear of being labeled (quite inaccurately, in my opinion) as an overachieving mom, I going to go ahead and admit that I’ve already started day-dreaming about her second birthday party.

For me, it’s not about competition, show or excess, rather it’s about embracing creativity and intentionality in honor of the miraculous day my daughter was born.

But, please read this: just because I love making my daughter’s parties special and personal, doesn’t mean that other moms should put pressure on themselves to tackle every Pinterest DIY project. One-year-olds won’t remember anything about their first birthday. They won’t feel less loved because you bought a grocery store cake. They won’t feel neglected if you e-mail your guests instead of a sending a custom letterpressed invitation adorned with vintage postage stamps. The end result isn’t really all that important. It’s your enjoyment of the process, ability to joyfully serve your guests, and having enough emotional margin to savor the moment that really matters.

For Beckett’s party I chose a boho glam theme. We knew we wanted to get her a teepee for her birthday (we received this wonderful plain canvas one from AllModern) and thought that could be a great focal point for our decorations. I spent a couple of months slowly crafting odds and ends, which turned into a big hodge podge of feathers, beads, tassels, and geometric shapes. Let’s call it eclectic.

We were also really lucky to have a generous friend bake us some delicious cakes for the party. Reena with Haute Cakery and I talked about several different options, but ultimately decided on a simple white fondant cake with geometric decorations. If you’re in Dallas and looking for a cake for any occasion, I highly recommend her.

Since the party was in the afternoon we kept it simple with some fun snacks. I tried to pick food that both the kids and adults would enjoy. Considering we didn’t have any leftovers, I’ll count this as a success. For those that are interested, we served strawberry banana s’mores, Trader Joe’s Mac n’ Cheese Bites and sweet potato sausage skewers.

Another fun feature of the party was our selfie station. We got this idea from some good friends who have a daughter a little older than Beckett and I love it. I had some photos blown up as large black and white engineering prints at Staples along with some small Instagram photos.

I’m really proud of how everything turned out and extremely grateful to all of our friends and family that helped us celebrate. All of Beckett’s friends left with a little goodie bag of fruit leather, metallic temporary tattoos and a friendship bracelet. And my gift to Beckett was the wall weaving pictured below. I hope she’ll grow to love it as much as I do.
