Wardrobe Editing

I am minimalist that loves collecting things and has a difficult time passing up a bargain. This means that I constantly do a lot of editing around my house in order to clean out the clutter. I am trying to prevent this problem by only purchasing things I absolutely love or desperately need in the first place, but until I develop some better habits, I’ll keep having my annual garage sale.

This past weekend I got the bug to go through my closet and purge. Even though I do this every season, I was a lot more aggressive this time. Many items don’t fit, are too short, have stains or just aren’t my style anymore. It feels so good to get them out of the closet and I’m looking forward to donating/selling them. If you’re interested in doing the same, I put together a little infographic decision tree to help you along in the process. This is a great place to start, getting you to ask the right questions about your clothing. I honestly believe that the less you have, the more likely you’re going to appreciate and love what you do. It’s also much less stressful getting dressed in the morning when you have less to choose from.

Let me know if you decide to edit your wardrobe. Tweet me a picture if you’re not sure whether you should keep something or not!

A great post! I sell on consignment and often help clients purge their closets. It’s always an emotional day! This would be great advance “homework” for them!

Love this – I do the same thing at the end of/beginning of a new season and it is the BEST feeling!

This is epic! I love your chart. I recently went through a big closet clean-out that I’m in the process of documenting. I wish I had this for reference!

This is awesome. I have given away so many things I later regret or that come back in style and I have kept silly things in my closet for far to long. This will make it way easier!

You read my mind! We just moved into our first house this weekend, and I’m going through my clothes as I unpack. It’s so hard for me to let go of things, because I either spent a lot or it’s a certain brand or it might (might) come back in style. My style has changed since I’ve purchased most of this clothes but it’s still hard to get rid of it. I’ll try using your chart and maybe that will help. Thanks!

This is so helpful! I wish I had read this before I threw out my old costume…which I would now LOVE to use this Halloween. Oh boo.

Hi Katie, thank you for your permission to use your fab’ decision tree. I’ve posted some of my clothes for you to look at – although I think decision has been made. http://www.amandavolley.co.uk/2012/11/something-old-something-newso-ditch-old.html

Why do you HAVE to keep your wedding dress? I’ve never understood this!!!!!!

    • http://modern-eve.com Katie Anderson

You definitely don’t have to! In fact, I tried consigning mine a couple of years ago, but the place went out of business. Still might. I just wanted to give people an out to keep it, if they wanted to. :)

I too have a hard time letting go of old clothes. Sometimes they spark a fond memory but most often it’s the decision making that stops me. Thanks for the chart.
